Fontys
Team Fontys SDC
At the RDW Self Driving Challenge, Team Fontys is back and ready to compete. This joint team from Fontys ICT and Fontys Automotive brings together a diverse group of students with complementary skills, combining software expertise with automotive knowledge.
That collaboration is exactly what makes this team stand out. By working across disciplines, they are able to approach autonomous driving from both a technical and practical perspective, creating a solid foundation for innovation.
Back as defending champions
Team Fontys enters this year’s competition with confidence. Last year, they took home the win in the open category, proving their system could perform under real competition conditions.
Now, they return not only to compete, but to build on that success. With new ideas, improvements and fresh energy, they are ready to push their system even further.
Driven by learning and teamwork
For Team Fontys, participating in the challenge is about more than just winning. They are motivated by the opportunity to learn more about self-driving technology, to challenge themselves and to grow as a team.
They are especially excited to see their work come to life. Building a system that can actually drive itself and watching it perform in the real world is what makes this project so rewarding.
How their system works
Their self-driving system combines multiple technologies to understand its surroundings. Using a depth camera, GPS and local visual recognition models, the vehicle is able to perceive the environment, make decisions and control its movements.
By integrating these different inputs, the system can respond dynamically to what is happening on the track.
Finding the right balance
This year, Team Fontys is focusing on improving the balance between GPS and vision-based systems. By leveraging the strengths of both, they aim to create a more robust and reliable solution.
At the same time, they are working on significantly improving the efficiency of their visual recognition models, making the system faster and more effective.
Preparing for the unexpected
One of the biggest challenges they anticipate is dealing with unexpected situations during the competition. The track environment can be unpredictable, and ensuring that both software and hardware perform reliably will be key.
Expected challenges
Unexpected situations on the track will likely be the biggest hurdle.
Keeping hardware reliable and ensuring the vehicle can respond to unpredictable scenarios will be essential during the competition.
Learning, building and enjoying the process
For the team, this challenge is a chance to deepen their understanding of autonomous driving and explore its real-world feasibility. At the same time, they are gaining valuable experience in collaboration and teamwork.
And just as important, they are having fun. Building, testing and improving their system together is what makes the experience truly worthwhile.
Ready in purple
If they had to describe themselves in three words, it would be teamwork, learning and purple. With a strong team spirit and a title to defend, Team Fontys is ready to take on the challenge once again.
