Firda

At the RDW Self Driving Challenge, Team Firda brings together a dedicated group of students from Firda Emmeloord. The team consists of eight members, working closely together across different roles.

Within the team, a group of software developers focuses on building and improving the autonomous system, while a dedicated safety team ensures that everything operates securely and responsibly. This clear division of roles allows them to work efficiently while keeping safety at the core of their project.

Learning by doing

For Team Firda, the motivation to participate is all about learning and growth. The challenge offers a unique opportunity to develop new skills and see the results of their work come to life.

Being able to build something from the ground up and watch it perform in a real-world setting is what makes this experience especially valuable.

Inspired by the impact of autonomous driving

What drives the team is the potential of autonomous technology to make a real difference. They are inspired by how self-driving systems can improve road safety, increase accessibility and transform transportation.

At the same time, they are fascinated by the technical side of the challenge: how intelligent systems can interpret complex environments and navigate through them.

How their system works

Their self-driving system is built around three key elements. Sensors are used to perceive the environment, algorithms process and interpret the data, and decision-making modules determine how the vehicle should act.

All of these components work together in real time, allowing the vehicle to navigate autonomously and respond to its surroundings.

Focusing on reliability

For this challenge, Team Firda is focusing on building a robust perception system, supported by reliable planning and control algorithms. Their goal is to create a system that not only works, but performs consistently under different conditions.

Preparing for real-world uncertainty

One of the biggest challenges they expect is dealing with unpredictable situations. Real-world environments are constantly changing, and ensuring stable performance under varying conditions will be key.

Growing together as a team

Beyond the technical aspects, this challenge is also about teamwork. Team Firda wants to learn how to collaborate effectively and build reliable systems together.

By combining their skills and working towards a shared goal, they are developing both as engineers and as a team.

Curious, driven and learning

If they had to describe themselves in three words, Team Firda chooses curious, driven and learning. With that mindset, they are ready to take on the challenge and make the most of this experience.

Eight teammembers of team Firda are walking through a rolling door into a big hall. They are walking past street signs and Self Driving Challenge banners.
