Furious Five
At the RDW Self Driving Challenge, The Furious Five from Hogeschool Rotterdam are proving that strong teamwork starts with friendship. This group of students works closely together in a flexible and dynamic way, taking on tasks as they go and adapting their roles throughout the project.
Rather than fixed responsibilities, they embrace a hands-on approach where everyone contributes wherever needed. This keeps the team agile and allows them to learn from every step of the process together.
Choosing the most exciting challenge
The Self Driving Challenge is part of their fifth school project, and from a list of options, this one immediately stood out. For The Furious Five, it was the most interesting and fun opportunity to work on as a group.
That sense of excitement and curiosity is what drives them forward as they take on this complex and technical challenge.
From small project to big ambition
Their journey into autonomous driving started earlier during a project in which they built a small container mover that could drive autonomously. That experience sparked their interest in the field and motivated them to take it a step further.
Now, they are applying what they learned to a much larger and more challenging system.
Building step by step
At this stage, the team is still developing their autonomous system. Instead of rushing ahead, they are taking a structured approach by first collecting data.
By manually driving the kart, they gather valuable test data for line detection and LiDAR. This data forms the foundation for improving their algorithms and moving towards full autonomy.
Focus on line detection
For this challenge, their main focus is on building a reliable line detection system. To achieve this, they have already attended multiple testing days, continuously gathering and analysing data to improve their performance.
This step-by-step approach allows them to steadily progress towards a working autonomous system.
Facing the unknown
One of the biggest challenges they expect is navigating the track autonomously, especially because the final route will only be revealed shortly before the competition.
This means their system must be flexible and robust enough to adapt quickly to new conditions.
More than just a project
For The Furious Five, this challenge is about more than just technical performance. It is an opportunity to gain experience working on a larger project and to develop practical skills.
At the same time, they value the experience itself. Working together, learning together and creating lasting memories is just as important as the final result.
Chaotic, determined and competitive
If they had to describe themselves in three words, The Furious Five would choose chaotic, determined and competitive. It is a combination that reflects both their energy and their mindset.
A mission to prove themselves
With a strong sense of humor and ambition, the team is determined to improve on previous results and represent Hogeschool Rotterdam with pride.
The Furious Five are ready to take on the challenge, learn as much as possible and give it everything they’ve got.
