Omroep Flevoland in conversation with the RDW
Now that the Self Driving Challenge has officially started, the test days have also started for the participating teams. During the test (fri) days, the participating teams can have the opportunity to test their self-driving vehicle on the RDW test track in Lelystad. Reporter Raoul Kuipers, from Omroep Flevoland, took a look at a practice day of the Self Driving Challenge.
During the conversation, central questions arise such as what the Self Driving Challenge is and what makes it different this year from previous editions. There is also a vision of how the challenge prepares and prepares for the future. Former participant and crew member, Thijmen Fellinger, answers the most frequently asked questions in this conversation. The participating teams from the University of Twente and Hanze University of Applied Sciences are also interviewed. Where are the most challenges and what can we learn? The teams answer this question in this interview!
Gathering knowledge
A competition has been organized by the RDW (National Road Transport Agency) at the RDW site in Lelystad. This is the sixth edition of the Self Driving Challenge. This is a competition for self-driving cars. The RDW organizes this competition to attract students. This way they can implement innovations and enrich their knowledge. In this way, the RDW can collect knowledge regarding the inspection of self-driving vehicles.
Real traffic situations
The Self Driving Challenge has also started in Lelystad. After a number of editions at other locations, it can now be found there again. However, there is a difference in the competition compared to previous editions. This year they are using the switch to real traffic situations. Because you can easily imitate that in Lelystad, this location was deliberately chosen. There are traffic lights and zebra crossings.
Different categories
In addition, this year there is an open category for the first time. In this category, people can build an entire vehicle themselves and therefore do not have to use the RDW kart. This vehicle must pass a stricter inspection. In the closed category, all material has been supplied and the teams must ensure the correct software and settings for the kart. The right data can make the difference here. That is why the teams are busy collecting as much information as possible in this phase. The challenge started on February 12 and the final will be on June 14. On the final day, the teams must ensure that the car completes the course as quickly as possible and without errors.
