Fontys and Hanze Win the Self Driving Challenge 2024
Last Friday, June 14, the finale of the Self Driving Challenge 2024 took place. This year, 7 colleges and universities competed in two different categories. Fontys won the prize in the open category, while Hanze claimed the trophy in the closed category.
The participating teams gathered on Friday at the RDW Test Center in Lelystad. The Hague University of Applied Sciences kicked off the challenge. Teams had to complete six different tasks in the shortest possible time. Each team was given fifteen minutes to make their best attempt.
Closed and Open Categories
Teams in the closed category (The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Windesheim, NHL Stenden, University of Twente) used an electric RDW-kart, which they had to program themselves. Teams in the open category (Fontys University of Applied Sciences and University of the North) had to bring their own vehicles. Fontys brought a quad bike, while the University of the North used a Renault Twizy.
Hosting and Livestream
The race was broadcast live and could be followed from home. The vehicles were equipped with cameras, providing clear views of the action. Huge Car Guy Roland Tameling was the host of the day, providing commentary on the races. Want to see how the teams performed? The livestream is available for replay at www.selfdrivingchallenge.nl.
The Winners
The challenge was tough: only one team managed to successfully complete all six tasks. That team was Hanze University of Applied Sciences, whose kart was the only vehicle to finish in the parking spot, making them the winner in the closed category. Fontys University of Applied Sciences also performed well on the track. They completed 4 out of the 6 tasks before their quad bike went off the course. This performance was slightly better than that of the University of the North, earning them the win in the open category.
In the closed category, The Hague University of Applied Sciences took second place, and the University of Twente secured third place.
